This is a fantasy book for tree huggers. The first half of the book tries desperately to get you to care about environmental issues and planting seeds that never come into fruition, while the second half contains most of the action and is chaotic as it tries to tie in the storylines and confusingly incorporate tiny bits of romance. The underground world-building was interesting, but this book just didn’t land for me. I won’t be reading the sequel.
Graphic: Blood, Fire/Fire injury, Injury/Injury detail, Violence, and Xenophobia
Moderate: Death of parent, Murder, Grief, Animal death, and Genocide
Minor: Colonisation, Drug use, Sexism, Misogyny, and Bullying

I was simultaneously impressed with this book and wanted it to be over. The premise is fascinating and like good fantasy makes you ask hard questions about society and how far you would go to save the world. In this case it's the literal world - the trees and all living things rather than a subset of humanity.
I love Sequoia and the Giant redwoods and they made for a great setting.
