I decided to revisit this series for a little nostalgic halloween time reading, and it was just as good as I remembered. This was one of my absolute favorite series as a kid, and diving back in as an adult was such a treat. I really noticed during this reread how timeless and clever Lemony Snicket’s writing is. His tongue-in-cheek, deadpan humor makes the story feel far beyond the scope of a typical children’s book. The mix of wit, absurdity, and dark undertones is so entertaining that it works just as well (if not better) when you’re older. The Baudelaire orphans are instantly endearing, and Count Olaf is every bit as ridiculous, unsettling, and memorable as I recalled. The balance of gloom and humor is just perfect. I had so much fun rereading this and can’t wait to continue the series.

I’ve read the hard copy and listened to the audiobook version, if you’re going to partake in this series I would definitely recommend reading it; the illustrations and page designs add to the ambiance.

My daughter and I are reading through this series together. It's definitely a fun, quirky read for her age, though I'm enjoying it as well. It's a little frustrating to see all the bad things happening to the Baudelaires, but it is somewhat satisfying to see how the children figure a way out of their situation. The style of the books is fun, and I'd definitely recommend it for middle grade readers (4th-6th grades), though older readers would enjoy it as well. I probably wouldn't go too much younger than, say 3rd grade, unless parents are ready to have conversations about the bad things that happen to the kids.
Such a great, fun read! Lemony Snicket's writing style is so unique and interesting. This series is marketed at middle grade/elementary children but he treats the reader like an intelligent adult. And I love his narration! It's so fun and so easy to fly through! I love it!
