I realised I had been reading mostly mystery novels this year and wanted something short and easy to get through. When I spotted a copy of this book at my local library, I decided to pick it up.
I flew through it and felt so sorry for the Baudelaire children. I also think this is a wonderful choice for people learning English. Alongside the classics such as Harry Potter, Percy Jackson and the works of Roald Dahl, this is another excellent alternative.
Overall, this is a strong opening to the series, and I am eager to move on to the next book.

I remember reading this book for the first time when I was in the 6th grade. It was so bleak compared to all the things I read before, told through the lens of a narrator who constantly made light of the misery he was relaying to the audience. Needless to say, I absolutely loved it! The tone is dark but with a humorous lilt that takes a bit of the edge off the depressing circumstances. And as a young reader, I found it delightful that nearly all the adults in this series are completely incompetent. Thus, the Baudelaires are forced to take on the world alone as orphaned children—luckily, they are quite resourceful.
I would highly recommend this to anyone who likes intrusive (but funny) narrators and tenacious protagonists.

I loved it. I chose to read this book mostly because I adore the movie.
I feel sorry for these kids. They're orphans yet they experienced so much 'unfortunate' things. But let's just say I enjoyed reading their misery.
Can't wait to dig the second book. :)
