9 From the Nine Worlds is like a mini-vacation back to the chaotic, hilarious, and action-packed universe of Norse mythology, as only Rick Riordan can tell it. Imagine nine different worlds, each with its quirks, dangers, and delightful absurdities, all needing saving from the impending doom of Ragnarok. Now toss in nine diverse characters, each with their own story, and you’ve got a recipe for an unforgettable adventure.
We’re back with our old friends from the Magnus Chase series—Hearthstone, Blitzen, Samirah (Sam) al-Abbas, Alex Fierro, Sumarbrander, Thomas Jefferson Jr., Mallory Keen, Halfborn Gunderson, and more—each taking centre stage in their respective worlds. And yes, while Magnus Chase is off hanging with his cousin Annabeth Chase, the rest of the crew finds themselves knee-deep in trouble, from dodging dim-witted giants to dealing with murderous creatures and meddlesome gods.
One of the standout elements here is the diversity. Rick Riordan has always been fantastic at creating a cast that’s not just inclusive but integral to the story. We’ve got Hearthstone, my personal favourite, who turns his hearing impairment into a superpower, proving that heroes come in all forms. There’s Sam al-Abbas, who balances her duties as a Valkyrie with her Muslim faith, and Alex Fierro, who brings a refreshing perspective on gender fluidity. It’s a melting pot of characters that not only work together but thrive in their differences.
Rick Riordan’s trademark humour and wit shine through in this collection of short stories. It’s quick, funny, and just the right dose of Norse mythology to make you want to dive back into the Magnus Chase series. The structure is unique, with each of the nine Norse worlds getting its own short story, each showcasing a different character. While not every story hits the same high note (as is often the case with multi-character anthologies), the overall package is undeniably entertaining.
This might not be Rick Riordan’s absolute best, but it’s a charming addition to the Magnus Chase universe. It’s short, sweet, and brimming with that signature Rick Riordan flair that makes you laugh, gasp, and cheer. If you’re a fan of his writing, it’s another five-star read that’s well worth your time.

In each of the nine stories in 9 From the Nine Worlds, Rick Riordan takes a different character from Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard series and sends them to different one of the nine realms of Norse mythology. It's a great concept, and overall is carried out fairly well. The plot to each individual story is largely forgettable, but the insight into each supporting character's psyche and life makes it worth a read.
