Triggers galore! So be careful before diving into it. It was good but I still have unanswered questions so I am giving it 4 stars.

A chilling book about generational trauma, with horrifying supernatural elements. Was on the edge of my seat the entire time, finishing it in two sittings because I had to know what happened next.
Artfully explored the cycle of generational trauma through a scary and gory lens. The descriptions of the demon were  visceral and terrifying, with the possessed child resulting in a bleak ending of another repetition of this dark cycle
. Absolutely recommend for lovers of supernatural horror or beginners to the genre like me.

This was so promising to be honest. But it fell so flat. I was craving a horror kick and the synopsis and reviews from others really drew me in.

Jack, the father of two girls, 10 year old Abby and 6 year old Charlie, and husband to Aimee finds himself reliving his gruesome past, but finds himself in a precarious position this time.

Jack ran away, barely a teenager to another state when he couldn’t stand his home life anymore. He went on with his life and created a family of his own. One night as an adult a car accident literally turns his and his families life’s upside down.

What ensues is a play by play of Jacks troubled past with the condition of his family dynamics deteriorating as the story goes.

Now here is where I get annoyed with this book and gave it the rating I did. Something is wrong, but does Jack care enough to do anything about it?? NO. Does he *know* what’s wrong and chooses to not do anything? YES. Only when it’s way too late does Jack attempt to do anything that’s even relevant to the situation.

A lot and I mean A LOT could have been fixed if Jack and Aimee simply discussed what was going on and communicated with each other instead of shutting one another out. I hate the non communication trope in romance novels and have not seen it in any horror novels until now. I was so excited for this book, I really was, but I was met with nothing but disappointment. IMO this could have had a better outcome had there been more communication. I get these types of novels aren’t supposed to have a HEA, but shit even this was just a play by play of demonic possession. It just made me feel like Jack didn’t care enough about his family, but it didn’t seem like Aimee did either. Aimee was also extremely unlikeable, even more than Jack. The only characters that were likable were the old lady, Abigail, and the dog.

Overall this book wasn’t something I would recommend and sizzled out early on. It got 3.5 stars for ambiance and that’s pretty much about it. And the creepy vibes due to children.

Trigger warnings for two animal deaths and a child’s death.

I spent more time annoyed at the characters than being genuinely scared.
