I don’t even know where to start. I probably knew after the first few pages that I would give this book five stars, because Moïra Fowel-Doyle’s writing style is so beautiful that it took my breath away.
Even if I didn’t like all the stories one hundred per cent (but I liked almost all of them :‘D), I’m in love.
Above all, I loved the grotesque and absurd stories and the words used to tell them. I loved the variety of the writing style and the characters.

In fact, I find it hard to write more because I just don’t want to say anything about the content of short stories, hurr.
I think my favourite stories were „What would you give for a treat like me“, „Flowers“, „Nature Morte“, „Such a pretty face“, „Only corpes stay“, „The carrier“, „Saying its name breaks it“, „Break-up poem recited knee-deep in bog water“, „Two truths and a lie“, „Playing House“.
Well, maybe I should have said which ones didn’t knock my socks off. No matter xD

Really strong short story collection!

Ich glaube, meine Lieblingsgeschichten waren „What would you give for a treat like me“, „Flowers“, „Nature Morte“, „Such a pretty face“, „Only corpes stay“, „The carrier“, „Saying its name breaks it“, „Break-up poem recited knee-deep in bog water“, „Two truths and a lie“, „Playing House“.
Naja, vielleicht hätte ich eher sagen sollen, welche mich nicht so vom Hocker gehauen haben. Egal xD

Richtig starke Kurzgeschichtensammlung!

Overall:
There is a lot of stories in here. Thankfully, the writing style and tone changes now and then, so they actually feel distinct from one another and you can't get stuck with a writing style you don't like. It really feels like the author shows all her talents. A few stories weren't for me, but most of them were a joy to read. Oh yeah and all protagonists are female and sapphic (except for one story, you'll know which). That's a plus too.

What would you give for a treat like me: This one's the "an old man slowly turned to gold"-bit of the description. People get turned into other things here too. 4/5

Flowers: This one's the "flowers raining from the sky"-bit of the description. The love of two girls ✨blows away✨ a conservative village. 3/5

Nature morte: After a tragic event, a young artist is constantly followed by a shadow monster. 5/5

Such a pretty face: This one's the "is it someone you love wearing your face"-bit of the description. Louie's face just is her best feature, what can I say. 5/5, my favourite story

Only corpses stay: This one's the "a hole cut through the wire fencing that keeps the monsters out"-bit of the description. This feels like a post-apocalyptic movie I've seen. 5/5

The summoning: This one's the "a good old fashioned inter-dimensional summoning"-bit of the description. Let's say. For instance. The writing of some stories - definitely not this one - is a bit tedious. But you if you got like. Used to it. You'd still like it. 4/5

Rath: Is it gay to meet your childhood friend every year in the same place and make out heavily? Also completely unrelated gay warrior queens. 3/5

Sad Straight Sex at the End of the World: The title says it all. Written like a stage play. 4/5

The carrier: That is no normal baby in her belly. 2.5/5

Big round ball of light and the water: At the end of the world, a religious group of one male leader and his seven wives ensure that the sun rises every morning. 3.5/5

Saying it's name breaks it: When the power goes out, a bunch of teens make their home in a library and try to navigate this new world and their relationships. With a lot of riddles. 2.5/5

A different beat: The ghost of a star appears to his fan, although he isn't dead yet. 2/5

Break-up poem recited knee-deep in bog water: A bunch of poems telling the story of a relationship. 1/5, I really didn't like this. The only story couldn't finish.

Two truths and a lie: A girl "playing" with her "doll". This doll has seen things. And it might tell on them someday. 5/5

Playing house: A woman walks down a desert road with a house in her belly. (It's a metaphor) 1.5/5

arguably took me too long to finish. I always have a personal problem towards short stories collection as its never been a perfect five for me and for this book specifically I badly wanted to give five stars for the beautiful writing, the storylines, the characters, the WRITING!! just wished it hits my guts the same for every single story, but that's too much for me to want

3.5*
