I liked some of the characters and the queer rep, but there was a lot of unnecessary filler and the plot made very little sense. I personally liked the author’s most recent book “We Came to Welcome You” better. I thought I’d like this, too because I usually like edgy Y.A. but this was just…not it.

I loved how the whole story wrapped up and that it looked towards the beauty and positive rather the negative.
~ This definitely gave me low-key stranger thing vibes.
~honestly thank the lord the centipedes scenes weren't graphic because that would have done it for me.

This book hit so many topics - concise, brutal. I could have easily finished in one day. Very well written. I certainly became obsessed.
Raquel is a total icon - struggling with her sexuality; her mom falls under the sickness, forcing her to reconnect with her estranged father; embracing her community - her found family; the strength to keep going back until it ends on her terms.
Racism - the history of Raquel's neighborhood; first generation of those who fled war/starvation/death in homelands. With the use of horror, urban legends and facing demons.
I could go on. One of my best books of this year.
