I love a good black gay girl energy and this book introduces it and it plays a decent role in the overall story.
I’ve never seen ‘West Side Story’ but for some reason BDRU gives me those vibes with a heavy dose a fantasy/horror. (do not use that to decide if you want to read this book! I have no idea if it’s relevant).
As a non-Spanish speaking human, I often feel frustrated when there isn’t a translation- especially when whatever is said in another language is repeated often and an important part to the over all story. (More so when listening on audio!)
Overall it’s a pretty good story, with a mostly satisfying ending :)

love the premise of this. super solid idea, entwining the game with history and giving it the range that it had. v spooky, eerie, enjoyed that aspect a lot. the author also did super well writing in a modern setting without making it feel too dated. enjoyed the characterisation of kids doing dumb kid shit.
the writing wasn’t all there for me though; i wasn’t that invested in the emotional parts, some parts felt very tell-y instead of showing us/building things with a lighter hand. made things feel kinda shallow. the plot could have been pulled a little tighter too, i feel. overall things even out, i finished it in a couple hours.

This is a fast-paced YA debut that can only be described as Stranger Things meets the best of Reddit blackhole conspiracies. A mysterious game and missing teenagers - could the answer really be that there is a underground, "ghost" of lifetimes past? The atmosphere woven into Burn Down, Rise Up is dark and grisly, without being too grippingly horror. There are elements of community history, family disfunction, and the extent one would go for friendship.
The paranormal, magical-realistic elements are incredibly well done. Rooted in history, but fleshed out even further with online investigation and theories, it's a mystery that will keep readers sucked in late into the night. None of the elements are overdone or cheesy. Rather they are thoughtful and beautifully tied together, to create a fantastic story of loss and societal betrayal.
