If you like Stranger Things, you will love this book. This was a wild ride from beginning to end. There were times where I was so spooked that I had to put down my Ipad and walk away for a few minutes. I cannot tell you how refreshing it is to have a scary story when the black kids are the heroes. I also loved the historical tie ins. Our history, as painful as it can be, is an important part of us, and needs to be acknowledged. We need to learn from the past, and honor the sacrifices of those who came before us by continuing the fight for a better future. Vincent really captured that message throughout this story. Raquel is definitely one of my favorite characters of 2022.

Very good novel with a slightly underwhelming ending. Now I really want to know more about the Bronx's history, though!

I wasn't sure what to rate this. It was definitely enjoyable but I just didn't feel super connected to the characters and that makes it so much harder for me to enjoy. I thought the plot was really interesting. Overall this was pretty good, I just didn't connect with the characters super well, but if you are thinking of picking this up definitely give it a try

What even happened in this book?
Like there was a villain who was a creature/spirit person called the Slumlord? And then the actual villain? The Echo, which was some kind of centipede thing? There was a romance. There was the rescuing Cisco. Raquel's mom in a coma from "the rot". The spirit man in corduroy haunting Raquel. The spirits who were trapped in the challenge. The past players that got trapped in the challenge and were cannibals! The resguardos which worked by thinking happy thoughts? The school being a safe place how??? Because the spirits couldn't travel into the future? The cops stalking the mc and then dying! By the centipede, so were they in the challenge too? How? Did Aaron out Raquel?
It was a wild ride and I enjoyed it?
