I was really conflicted on how to rate this book because, on one hand, there were scenes I absolutely loved, and then there were sections I loathed.
This book had an extremely slow, very drawn-out start. It felt like nothing happened until about 200 or so pages in. It took a lot of patience and persistence to continue, but I am a trooper, and I can get through anything.
To be honest, I didn't like the FMC. Here's Isa in a nutshell: she's not like other girls, she's a loner/outcast, she would rather wear jeans than dresses. She always makes a point about how she hates wearing dresses when she's in them. She hates rich people and their opulence, and can't believe that they are spending money on her when she goes to work for them. Oh, and did I mention she reads romance novels?
There was some dialogue in there about their relationship being like a romance novel and them figuring out if it was filler or plot. I wanted to die from second-hand embarrassment.
Then there's Lucian. Here's a quote Isa says that describes him perfectly:
"I never know whether to slap you, or kiss you, Lucian. It's the most confusing feeling in the world."
That was how I felt about him during the entire book.
While the characters had great sexual chemistry, their love wasn't believable. I think it was in the epilogue where they say they love each other. In the last 94-96% was when he says he can't imagine a life without her.
Their relationship needed to be developed a lot more. She forgave him too
The book felt very disjointed because of so many things happening at once. The good things were so rushed, and then the others just dragged on.
Majority of the chapters were memories, which I guess helped understand the characters better. But sometimes, the chapters felt like they romanticised the wrong things. Lucian went through a lot as a teen, but it was more of a fetish to him than actual trauma.
The sadist gene was just silly. It didn't make sense at all. The secret sadist society was an afterthought. Why mention it if you don't delve into it?
If it had better dialogue, a more coherent plot, and not introducing the good bits right at the end, it would've been a fantastic book.
There were enjoyable moments, but it's not a book I would reread.
