I loved the development of the story, the setting and characters. However, when it comes to the lesbian sex scenes it made me feel uncomfortable, it seems to be written by and for men, which coming from a novel written by a woman left me feeling discouraged and couldn't fully enjoy the reading. I found the book frustrating, and even more so because it's very well written and interesting, just not for me

A perfect mix of Victorian, classical British literature style writing. The author is extremely clever with words. An endowing read for anyone who is struggling with coming out of just being comfortable with queerness. Excellent narrative style, and just when you think the plot could do it drag, it picks up again!

Extremely sexy whilst also being gripping and romantic. This is the fourth book I have read by Waters and her writing never fails to totally absorb me. I loved the details of late 1800s London and the glimpses into the spaces women found and made for themselves. I think Fingersmith will always be my favourite though as the plot was just so outrageously surprising. Would give this 5 stars if the narrator didn't enrage me every so often with her petty selfishness and childishness, but these moments were short-lived and the rest more than made up for it!
