Fun use of mythology, very helpful guide in the back with definitions. Loved the relationships within this and how they reflected each other.

It was nice to find a book inspired by Mayan mythology. I like books based on Greek mythology, but I must admit it gets much more focus than other mythologies. I enjoy these kinds of stories, even though they’re not accurate to their myths.

I liked the development Casiopea had. For most of her life, Casiopea was treated like a servant by her family. She dreamed of escaping her grandmother’s house and live far from them. She would do anything they asked her for her mother’s sake. By the time she reunited with Martin, she refused to do his bidding. It was interesting to see Martin’s perspective. It doesn’t justify his actions, but it shows why he is the way he is.

I loved the descriptions of every new setting introduced. I was able to imagine them vividly. I wished we got to know more of 1920s Mexico.

I liked the ending of the story. It made sense Casiopea and Hun-Kamé didn’t end up together. Still, you can’t help but hope otherwise.

Some things were a bit predictable. Nevertheless, I had a good time with it.

finished this one out of PURE SPITE!!! so sorry but this was just so fantastically dull. & surprisingly childish for an adult fic novel. i can see the vision that moreno-garcia was trying to make here - a sort of midnight bedtime story type of fairy tale, all velvety darkness, exploring the parallels between divinity & mortality. but the execution......

characters r so bland!!! and casiopea in particular is suuuch a passive character & her motivations are so lackluster and repetitive. the characters were all pretty passive imo, and the plot was extremely predictable. the only one i kinda liked was hun-kamé and his relationship with casiopea and mortality in general - the romance aspect was also quite nice, if not somewhat wobbly in terms of pacing.

only redeeming quality is the sick worldbuilding!!! i love the 1920s mexico setting so much and every time casiopea and hun-kamé got to a new city, i loved moreno-garcia's descriptions, they were so so lush. also the concept of mayan gods seeping through the fabric of the modern city is very very cool. but again the execution didn't meet my expectations.... most of the mayan god side characters were marionettes - just there to speak their dialogue lines of warning, give hun-kamé what he wants, then fade into the background and not be seen again. i wish the characters were more active!!!! i wish there was more conflict and unpredictability!!!! agh!!!!!

overall although the vibes seemed nice from the start, i cannot recommend this to anyone in good faith. maybe just for the mexico rep tho idk. 2.5 stars

Estas son mis tres estrellas de "lo he disfrutado, me lo he pasado bien, pero ya". Igualmente, sigo queriendo leer más libros de esta autora.
