This is a beautifully told story. I particularly loved the elegant & old fashioned fairytale style prose. It, too, has some of the most beautifully descriptive writing I have read, and I have particular love for any book that can paint such a vivid picture so effortlessly. I felt like I could see everything happening in this book right in my mind.

You might think that gives it a 5* rating, but the story itself was just slightly lacking for me to give it full marks. I loved the first half but felt like it didn't really stick the landing at the end, or move me emotionally.

Historical fiction with a fascinating cast of characters from Aztec mythology.

Comparable: Mexican Gothic or any Rick Riordan book series.

This book is an ideal fit for anyone looking for a fantasy story based in Aztec mythology and set in 1920s Mexico.

Silvia Moreno-Garcia does a fantastic job creating atmosphere. This isn't the first book of hers that I've read, and I had similar comments then. I was excited about the novelty of Mexican culture and history, and Moreno-Garcia delivered with excellent, research-based writing that adapted ancient mythology to a modern (well, the 1920s) world.

However, the book was very predictable. And while I really enjoyed the modern take on ancient gods, demons, and spirits, the plot and character development didn't hold my interest for long.

I can’t decide between three and four stars for this. The mythology and writing are wonderful. But I feel like the romance aspect of this was very much too little too late? I didn’t really understand the end of the “competition” and I wasn’t a fan of the ending in general. :/
