It was just okay. The character development felt a bit weak and the ending fell flat for me. Very anticlimactic.
I liked the idea of the book - I read a lot of similar books based on Greek and Roman mythology, so I anticipated enjoying it, and I did enjoy learning about Mayan mythology. But the last few chapters and the ending just felt so anticlimactic. It made me feel like “now what? What was the point of all that?” Disappointing. And it felt like there were a lot of unexplained plot holes along the way.
There also wasn’t enough character development for me. Casiopea felt like not much more than “headstrong girl who is intelligent and has had a hard life.” No real character traits to speak of beyond that for the most part. And the romance felt forced to me.

A curious girl helps the God of Death try to reclaim his throne from his twin brother. It was fun to read about Mexico set in the 1920s and to learn about the Mayan gods.

this was too fast-paced for my taste, but i know some people really enjoy this kind of pacing.
however i do think the romance here was very weak. i didn’t get any sense of chemistry between the two main characters until the very end, and even then it wasn’t much. also, there was SO much infodumping. i really loved getting to learn about these deities and the history, but it felt like reading a textbook sometimes with the amount of explanation that went on.

I just adore the way Silvia Moreno-Garcia writes her characters. They're so very human. Even the gods in the story.
The story progressed like a fable or myth, which I found captivating. The dream-like/nightmarish setting of Xibalba felt primordial and ever-present.
Also, this is how you write a god or supernatural being/teenage girl romance xD I'm glad the relationship was not to be, but god I rooted for them, which I did not expect!
I also enjoyed the fact that we stopped by Baja and Mexico city, that made for a fun little easter egg moment! (I wonder if the other cities/places mentioned were ones too..)

There are so many aspects of this story to love and I was really looking forward to it, but it felt skeletal to me -- missing in the details and tension that would allow me to really sink into the story. I had to push myself to keep reading. After putting it down for a few weeks, I still can't get into it so I am stopping halfway through.
I didn't enjoy how the historical background was in exposition paragraphs. It was interesting scenery but it broke the pace
Mainly, this one isn't for me. A little too young adult with romance.

It took me so long to read this book! I just kept losing interest and picking up other books. It may be my fault because of that, that I didn’t like this book as much as I thought I would. I loved a lot of the imagery in this book, it felt like such a magical setting. I did think there would be a little more falling in love, but that’s fine. Would’ve been nice though 🙈
