Complicated
house of flame and shadow absolutely consumed my life these past few days. I want to outline my favorite parts and celebrate my most beloved characters but I can’t do so without spoiling it for my friends. so allow me to do my best to dance around the details, for now.
there was not a chapter in this book where I was bored. my emotions were all over the place but nothing rivaled the joy I felt as I was time and time again surprised at which characters returned for hofas.
I was watching an interview sjm did where she was talking about how when she is writing her books she is feeling the same emotions as her characters, and you can tell. as I laughed and cried my way through this triumph of storytelling and honestly desperation for survival and a better world, I too felt the pain alongside these characters. to sit in the shadow of such a dark and twisted evil and feel that your valiant attempts are futile but to continually try and try and try on the off chance that something gives and good ultimately will trump evil, it’s an inexplicable type of hope.
I did my best to savor this book, as it will be quite sometime until there’s another one. I owe so much of my joy to sjm and her series and her worlds and her characters- as I started reading her books at one of the lowest and most challenging parts of my life. now, almost two years later, my life is so different and in the most important ways it is better. the journey I have been on these past few years is a testament to the iconic crescent city quote, “through love, all is possible.”
and as I finished this book, I was left with a new quote. one that will comfort me and guide me as I continue to forge my path forward. “you will find your way.”
