For the last year or so I’d been thinking of starting Crossfit. This book, which was well-written, talked me out of it.

I have never written a review on here, but, not unlike Prince Harry, I am breaking my silence. I initially gave this book a rating of three stars, but upon further reflection, I could not live with myself. This book was not good.

Cool workouts though.

Mat Fraser is surprisingly funny and I found myself laughing out loud at several points. It had some helpful tips for the everyday athlete that I have incorporated into my training that has helped me perform better. I am not a fancy cook, so I skipped right over the recipes.

As someone who has been doing CrossFit for over a year now and entering my second Open season, this book is great as a supplement. I was slightly hoping for a more memoir-like book, but I felt like there were a few gaps along the way, though Mat's story was very eye opening. I think if you watch his videos, and have followed his journey otherwise, this book can feel kind of redundant, BUT it's great to have physically, jot down times, notes, and Sammy's AMAZING recipes.

This book doesn’t fully translate the elite level in which Matt performs. However, it does give helpful tips and information that could change the way an individual approaches their training.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone just starting out in the sport of CrossFit.

Thanks to PRHAudio for this complimentary audiobook! Interesting read about CrossFit. I never had much inclination towards the sport but it was enjoyable listening to Mat Fraser speak on it and the routines and training it took to be the best at it. I think this is definitely a book specific for CrossFit culture. Although I do also believe working hard pays off... So it is motivational to those not doing burpees and thrusters throughout the week. I am getting back into the gym this new year myself and definitely had me more eager to hit the weights.

To be honest, I’m not sure how to rate this book. I really wanted it to be insights into Mat’s career as an athlete and memories from the games and things he learned along the way. Instead, it read like a coach’s manual with illustrations, and Sammy’s recipes intertwined. There were some fun things to read, but overall it was a quick read because it wasn’t at all what I thought it was.

This might be great for the next level of elite athletes, but for me it just didn’t do the trick.
