I would give this an actual rating of 3.92 (haha, so technical). But that is mainly because I haven't read a lot of manga, so it is a very different format then what I am use to. Still fantastic and I am looking forward to reading the next one!

This is the first manga I've ever read, & I enjoyed it for the most part. I thought the art was very good, and I liked most of the characters. I did find it a bit boring though, and I thought there was a lot of just info-dumping, explaining the manga industry. Also, I felt the "relationship" was a bit weird and unrealistic. I will be continuing on though, just because I did enjoy it.
10-24-14 This was severely average for me.

3.5 stars.

Edit: Jan 2014 There are a few things I want to address that didn't even cross my mind in my original reaction to Bakuman.

#1 - Apparently, this is by the same guys that did the Death Note series, which is surprising to say the least. Death Note is held up pretty highly among fans of darker manga and Bakuman feels more like a freshman project. Also, the change in tone is ridiculous. To go from Death Note to this is not something you would expect, or necessarily want.

#2 - There's been some talk about the undertones of sexism in the series and although I normally have a pretty good eye for spotting that sort of thing, I just didn't see it in the first volume. However, I understand that it was something I missed. The female characters are pretty underutilized as most of the plot surrounding them is because the main character focuses a lot on wanting to marry his crush. The two central main characters are young boys that are very overly naive and traditional about women and relationships. I personally thought of this as aspects of their character, however the author has a history of reported sexism in his work, so take caution.

Anyways onto the original reaction!

I was surprised by this one. Bakuman pulled me into the story and made me interested in its characters almost effortlessly.

The story line is pretty simple, but the way that everything comes together with the characters personalities and the sub plot of the Uncle made it so I actually found myself enjoying this more then I ever expected to.

The art for the book is great. If you're writing a manga about drawing manga you better bet that this artist was paying extra attention to the quality. The expressions are priceless and with every character design perfectly matched to the individual. I am incredibly impressed.

I'll definitely be adding this series to my to-read list.

Misogyny and Manga. These two things come together in volume 1 of Bakuman. Though it was a great peek into the manga industry (and I was curious how the manga duo worked without one doing all the heavy lifting), one of the main characters claims that focusing only on grades instead of being attractive as a girl in order to get a boyfriend is "dumb". The crush that the other main character has on a girl is innocent, but what's behind is bad. I might still read this series though, because the characters do have their likable traits. It is refreshing to see the style of Death Note in a sort of "slice of life" way.

This was my first manga and I was not disappointed! It was so good!

It's actually ' Bakumon ' ( there's a small ' o ' after the ' n ' ) It doesn't have a baku in it : (

Not all that informative ( except there's a difference between a g-pen a kabura pen and dip pens )

done reading and still love it. i noticed a couple of issues though which diaappointed me a bit but as a whole, i still LOVE this manga. still my fave manga ❤
