High school students in the Graphic Novel Club that I advise mentioned this series, so I wanted to read at least the first book. I liked so much about this book but numerous parts are very sexist. The way in which females are portrayed is ridiculous and really takes away from the story.

Disclaimer: I'm reading this for work and it's not a story I'd ordinally pick up.

This is a manga about two middle schoolers who want to create a manga together. Volume 1 covers their decision to work together and then the creation of their first manga. I don't really find Saiko or Shujin likeable and they kinda give me incel energy. I hated how they talked about the girls in their class and also their obsession with "manliness". Learning more about manga and how it's made was interesting though. I probably wouldn't continue reading the series if it was just for fun, but alas. Onward through the series.

I love how energetic and inspiring these kids are. It's amazing to read a manga about creating manga. I've already learnt so much and this was just the first volume! :)

3.5 stars borderline 4 stars.

Yay! I finished my first manga!
I enjoyed the story of the intensity of manga - probably a good first pick for a manga newbie like me.
That being said - what 14 year old leaps from crush to declaration of marriage?? Maybe it's a cultural thing? IDK - that was surprising.
I hope Mashiro realizes sooner rather than later that he's falling into the same patterns as his uncle.
I'm kind of interested in continuing. It dragged a bit but I am interested in Mashiro and Takagi's journey.

More like 2.5. Quite a cute story about two boys who want to become manga artists spiced with an awkward love story. A quick read with some interesting insights into the proccess of creating manga.

This rating and review are for the whole (uncompleted) series.

While Death Note was all suspense and mystery, Bakuman simply told about struggles of mangakas in Japan. Mean to reach their dream, Shuujin and Saiko struggle againts their own principle and their dream. A nice story about life, love, and dream. Made me remember my own struggle to be a writer I am now.
informative inspiring medium-paced

A manga series about a boy who wants to be a manga artist. The story was very slow and super text/dialog heavy. There were a ton of instances of sexism too (but maybe that was intentional since the pairing up of two middle school boys make up the majority of dialog and action? I liked it, but it was just way too slow for me.
