Of course I saw the movie years ago - haunting, powerful, beautiful, painful. And the book has been on my list for years - long ago I read, and loved, Nat Turner. But this book is so dense with meaning and history and life, tangled in the stories of three lives (with Styron writing much of himself into the narrator) and the Holocaust, that it took me a very long time to finish. I read it slowly, and reread parts of it as I went. And even though I knew the underlying story of Sophie's choice from the movie, the book is so much more than that. Stunning and profound, written with passion and intelligence, leaving me drained of emotions.

Beautiful. Heartbreaking. A must read.

I thought the story was brilliant, I just thought the writing was too dry; too droll. It felt almost like a black comedy, where the tragedy is apparent but you're still supposed to laugh. Which kind of makes sense, because life goes on, you know? What are you gonna do, be miserable the rest of your life? But still a little... I don't know...disrespectful?

I also hated the narrator. It felt like he wasn't seeing Sophie at all; he was just seeing a beautiful woman who he desperately wanted to f*ck. 3/5
