When I was a kid, we had a huge pile of Great Illustrated Classics books, and this is where I first encountered this book. I realized I had never read it "for real," though. Much more of a character study of Buck than a novel but still great. Some problematic language and stereotyping, but it's an old book.

4.5 Somehow I missed this while I was in school. It was pretty brilliant and I wondered once again how I would have been affected if I'd read it in my youth. Some scenes were brutal, but it had me hooked from the very beginning. It lived up to the classic status.
I never read this in school, and I just listened to it on audiobook. Interesting story told from the perspective of Buck, a St. Bernard mix that is 'dognapped' and sold into sled dog slavery. Some of the abuse was difficult to endure, but overall it was an interesting look into the Yukon Gold Rush life.
This book will consume my personality for the next 3 months
