I was surprised at first to read from the point of view of a dog, but I think London’s portrayal of Buck’s character was believable and not a work of fantasy. I enjoyed all of the characters, not just the moral and conventionally likable ones; they all served their purpose. I started listening to the Into the Wild audiobook while reading this, I suppose I can understand McCandless better for it. The parallels were actually pretty striking, I imagine McCandless thought himself somewhat like Buck, but I guess in the end he wasn’t as cutthroat. Rooting for Buck for 117 pages was time well spent.

Read for the Penguin 100 must read classics challenge though I definitely wouldn’t describe it as must read! I think it maybe has more ‘classic’ status in America as I hadn’t heard of it before. I can see why it might be a good story as an introduction to classics for young readers but to me it didn’t really go beyond a story about a slightly bland domesticated dog who gradually becomes more wild!
