This trilogy is incredible, unique, and peerless within the fantasy genre. I just finished it, and I feel emotionally drained and hollowed out, in a good way. I will remember these characters, their traumas, and their triumphs for a long, long time. The top notch character writing is perfectly interwoven with politics, themes of trauma (so much trauma), and a world of magic that feels very alien while remaining deeply human. Hobb is both a demented war criminal and character writing mastermind.
There are so many layers to this story that I know will come to me as I process this book. Generational trauma, sexual abuse, child abuse, the right to one’s own life and destiny and the choices we make along the way, the death and rebirth of many things: of our species, of our communities and families and ourselves.
This was a book of resiliency and evolution, how healing can end and begin other cycles. As depressing as some of these moments were, man, I can’t help but see the beauty of life and living. Paragon’s arc had me sobbing. I needed this book and didn’t even realize.
That being said, this is a book that can be highly triggering for those who have experienced abuse. I especially struggled the second half of this book, but the ending was exactly what I needed it to be, and for that, I’m glad that I read it. This is some of the best reading I’ve ever done.

I did enjoy this book. I had to let Hobb cook but it all came together at the end. As I've heard before, I think the characters are what really shines here. The growth of certain characters across the trilogy is immense. I'm down to read more Hobb.
