Such a strange read, full of so many surreal moments and characters. This both makes me want to read Goethe's Faust (I'm familiar with the story framework, but have never read it), since it so obviously was inspired by it, and makes me wish I was better educated in Soviet politics during this time period. There are a lot of references and jokes that went right over my head, but the story itself was entertaining even despite that.
I'm sure if I had more of a background in the history I'd have given this a higher rating. As it stands, for a crazy, whirlwind adventure, it was a good read and I actually did find it hard to put down because I wanted to know just what other insane things the characters would get themselves up to.
If nothing else, the giant talking cat was well worth the read--add the witch to that and I was sold.

You CANNOT read this book in a mindset of "I'll just read this whenever I get a free moment." This novel demands your full attention. Definitely worth the read, Bulgakov is on the same level as Dostoevsky and Hemingway.

Very slow build in book 1, with a growing sense of unease, but book 2 is a really great change of pace, fixed mainly on the one perspective, and moving ahead at a faster rate. The climax at the Spring Ball of the Full Moon was an amazing sequence. And the book managed to produce quite a few genuine laughs out of me.

Sometimes I really liked this book and admired the creativity. People describe it as a fever dream but I didn’t feel that way. I thought the first three chapters were phenomenal. But the Pontius Pilate flash backs started to get a little old.
The first book I found a little hard to follow at points with so many new characters and sometimes given different names or similar names to other characters. There was a bit of a struggle to keep them all straight.
Book two is where it picked up for me. I loved the Satans Ball. I do feel at the end it dragged a bit but overall a good book!

You can't really describe the world of this book, you just have to read it for yourself. Political, sexy, dark, morbid, it completely creates a world of chaos around you and makes you think about how the world and governments operate today and what morals we have and/or are lacking. Trippy and the only book of its kind I have ever read. I have re-read it three times now.
