It feels strange to read a classic, something people consider one of the greatest novels of the 20th century, and say, "Hey, you guys, this book is actually REALLY good...!" I admit that I did have to read a few summaries/analyses to make sure I grasped everything that happened in each chapter, but still. If you've got a "books to read before I die" list and this isn't on it, make amends.

No... chce jeszcze wydać bal.

Każda postać, nawet te trzecioplanowe, miały głębię charakteru i rozpoznawalne cechy.

O "Mistrzu i Małgorzacie" będę myśleć długo.

Weird from start to finish, both subtle political satire and imaginative escapade, Bulgakov's masterpiece is certainly something that will stay with the reader for a long time. I can't think of any other book that manages to combine modern-day Moscow (at least modern for the author) with Jerusalem in the time of Christ, or the pranks of the literal Devil and his gang with a deep narrative about an artist's struggle to express himself in a society where this is forbidden and a woman's eternal devotion to this same man and his work. I don't want to spoil anything, so I'll simply quote a phrase that I think perfectly summarizes this novel:
"Kindly consider the question: what would your good do if evil did not exist, and what would the earth look like if shadows disappeared from it?"
And of course the eternal:
"Manuscripts don't burn."

The Master and Margarita is a fascinating book, but it has what might be 30 characters, each with two or three names. I found the entire story enjoyable and maddening and easy to invest in, but it was hard to track everything that was happening. So if and when you read that, just keep in mind that the dead Russian authors love their names!

As a side note, this edition had great footnotes that came in very handy for understanding the subtexts of some of the references Blugakov made. If you're into cynical Russian takedowns of Soviet society via the Devil, I highly recommend this book!

Contar a história deste livro é impossível.
