This book demonstrates how quick Kinsey can make connections with people and her juvenile delinquent past is a bonding method with the people she encounters. It's been a minute since I read a book in the series, so I was thrown with her relationship with Dietz. I didn't remember it being "serious" but I was happy to read about someone going through depression or dark period. This book did point out how she holds on to people and that it's different than being independent. More introspective and I was here for it! I also liked that Kinsey didn't appear to be in danger at the end of this one, those can get tiring-how often can someone face death and keep chugging along.

Not as good as the previous few in the series - this one started up slow but picked up in the second half. I didn't solve the case before the reveal near the end. A couple of characters from previous books have returned and their situations have changed relative to Kinsey. In this book also we learn more about the area surrounding Kinsey's neighborhood. We may be seeing more of the folks from the law firm that Kinsey uses for office space.
I'm a probate paralegal, so this one was right up my alley. Wasn't expecting a murder 1/2 way through the story, but I knew it wasn't going to be wrapped up neatly in the first few chapters. Certainly didn't see the ending coming. Great twist!
