Damn. I can't believe it's really over. While this wasn't my favorite of the series, (I prefer the political maneuvering sections to the battles) it was a truly great ending to a monumental story. I look forward to reading the prequel.
Well I finished the series. This was a good book. Not the strongest in the series although I couldn’t say which are stronger bc it’s been years since I’ve read them. There were a lot of things I liked in this book and a number of things that disappointed me. Overall the series was wrapped up good enough and had some great highs in this final battle. I feel like I need to sit and think about this ending for a little longer but deep down I know I’m gonna rush off and read different and better books and gradually lay the wheel of time down and let a lot of it be forgotten. This is a series. A good series. I definitely wouldn’t whole heartedly recommend it. Regardless of my various gripes with all 14 books I went on the journey with all the characters and I’m happy I made it through.

It's over. I can finally read other books.
Mostly kidding. I'm glad I finally bit the bullet and tackled it, after a decade of people telling me to read the series. It’s incredibly long, flawed, and at times so frustrating that I came close to pulling my hair out. Yet, despite all of that, I was never tempted to DNF The Wheel of Time, and I’m going to look back on the series as a whole rather fondly. There’s something entrancing about the recycled character tics, odd pacing, naming patterns, and the vast array of other weirdness found in these pages. I’d take these messy, charming books over some of the more soulless, meticulously planned fantasy/sci-fi series any day of the week. As frustrated as I was at times, I was never bored.
The last three books in particular were fascinating to read. Robert Jordan was clearly a "discovery" writer. He had a general outline of how he wanted the series to progress, but he didn’t mind how many side paths he wandered down to get there. Characters, concepts, and locations ebbed and flowed in importance throughout the story. On the other hand, Brandon Sanderson is an "outliner" through and through. He approached his books with a serious and detailed plan in mind. One of the reasons I wanted to read The Wheel of Time was pure curiosity—how could another author take over and finish such a complex series? The sheer number of (literal) narrative threads being pulled together at the end in such harmony is something I’ve never seen in any form of media before. Sanderson stuck the landing, and I can’t begin to fathom how he did it.
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: I could never actually recommend The Wheel of Time to anyone. However, if you’re really curious and have a lot of time on your hands, there’s something very special here. It's a classic for a reason. This last book in particular is something that will stay floating around in the back of my head for a long, long time.
