3.91 AVERAGE

Overall, I give the series as a whole 4 out of 5 stars, but I'm not thrilled with books 4-5... the plot seems to have changed from the first book. I'm not sure where the author is going with this series, but it seems to be taking a darker turn (which normally I do not mind) for the Heroine. The changed roles of 2 major characters thrown me off. I'm not liking it... alive, dead then back to being alive... good person gone evil... both in less than 10 pages. It felt sort of rushed. I'll still read the series for as long as possible, but I am hoping for a return to how this series started...

Ok. Say what you want about urban fantasies, but this is seriously amazing. The story just keeps getting better and better without feeling like it's just rehashing plots from the past. How long until the next one is out?!?!

Another amazing addition to the Chicagoland Vampires series. The ending was great. I cannot wait until the next book

Oh how I love Chloe’s writing!

The absence of Ethan was felt in this book. It was weird not having him them and I felt like Merit; like I had lost of part of me.

We follow Merit as she navigates through her life after the death of her master and lover, Ethan. As she learns how to live and do her job without his guidance. It was an incredibly wild ride and I hated it. I get the fact that she needed to grown not only as a person but as a Vampire, but God Damn you Chloe how could you do this to us?

Regardless of having no Ethan, I still loved the story and the Arc but I hated the cliff hanger because now I have to go and buy then next one ASAP.

Jonah, oh Jonah. Thank you Chloe for thowing in this huge curve ball. It was a good one. I will forever the grateful for this character. He’s funny, fierce, and loyal and exactly the kind of stability Merit needs in her life and someone who can kind of challenge her.

Chloe threw a lot of things at us in this book, so much stuff that I couldn’t think who was behind everything and that’s what kept you reading.

This was such a good book to add to Merit’s story and I can’t wait to see where we end up next!

I am currently on book #7 and came back here to say that I find this the absolute most accurate quote in the entire series thus far.

"Occasionally I'd bring along an audiobook. The 12th or 13th instalment in some long running mystery or action series I couldn't seem to stop buying, even as the books became formulated copies of the ones that came before."

3.5 stars. I'm torn with my rating on this book. The first half was so achingly slow it was almost painful to read. But then the last half flew by. The ending was one I actually expected, but hoped would NOT occur. Don't hate me, but I'm team Jonah all the way.

The book started with Merit in a daze about Ethan. The problem was, she never really expressed much emotion over his loss. So, I really couldn't feel much for her. And the plot around the lake turning black and her attempt to solve the mystery was just uninteresting to me. Also, the GP's investigation of Cadogan House was so freaking irritating that I wanted to strangle Frank.

The only bright part of the story, frankly, was Jonah. I grew to like him in the prior book, and I was hoping Ms. Neill would take a giant leap by giving Merit a chance to be with someone else.  I'm sure most other readers are glad that did not occur, though.

Merit's friendship with Mallory was way off, too. (Of course, there was ultimately a reason for it.) While I loved Merit's interactions with Lindsey, Mallory was always her rock, and it was sad to see that change. Mallory's actions throughout the entire book--but especially at the end--were so unlike her character that I just don't know what to say.

I have read other reviews that call this book "filler," and I agree. Let's hope the next book gets Merit and friends back on track!

~~~ Before I start I should let you know that I made a little “explanation corner” at the bottom of my review. I think I’ll start using this more since I use funky words most people don’t understand. So if you see a “*” or something know what you should go to the bottom of the page blah blah blah you get it, you’re smart kids ~~~
I can’t express how happy I am right now. No no, calm down people, I’m not happy because this book is awesome. I’m happy because I’m finally done with it. My fire needs more stuff to burn so this book will do wonderfully.
How to best describe Drink Deep? Boring, disappointing, skimfest*, filler, you name it. I can’t believe I was so excited over this *facepalm* but how could I have known? Can you blame my naivety? Plus everyone was excited about it and many people gave it high ratings, of course I was bound to fall into this horrible trap. Anyhow, if you don’t want to read more of my review, stop here. Be warned you demons, the bitchiness starts now. Proceed at your own cost!
So let’s start with my problems. One, there is the fact that everyone’s too cool about Ethan dying. Hell even I suffered more than the characters in this damn book. Suffer you bitches!! Your god is gone!! Yes I want to see him come back; yes I like him more than I like Merit. Have a problem with that?
Two, why is Merit not funny anymore? Was she ever funny? I don’t even remember... all I know is that right now she’s one cold-hearted (pun intended) bitch. She’s so excited about Jonah. What the hell? She should be running away from him like he’s the plague! Spit in his face, throw holy water on him, idk**! Something! And then the dude tells her that his feelings are totally platonic and she believes him. Platonic my ass, you can obviously see that he’s drooling over her and is probably mind-raping her as we speak! Her stupidity is beyond judgment…
Three, see image 1.
Four, why does this feel like the story being filled in just to cover a few more books? Oh wait, I have the answer for that. I’ve recently heard that there’s a contract on ten books for this series. Now I don’t know about you but I think that’s a pretty high number considering the series we’re talking about. Chicagoland Vamps isn’t complex enough to hold ten freakin’ books. This is book five and basically it’s total filler so guess what’s in store for us? Utter bullsh*t. *mumbles to herself* ten books pfff…
I actually don’t give a sh*t about the river turning black or the nymphs losing their magic or whatever. I want a relevant story, something that would interest me. This is not cool. That’s why I skimmed 70% of the book. Yes my dear kids, 70-f*cking-percent! Is this not a waste of time in your dictionary?
Five, it was too predictable.
Spoiler I was sure Mallory was responsible for all the creepy stuff going on. I didn’t like this of course, I see it as more filler to the pie. Also, the way Ethan came back wasn’t as dramatic as I thought it would be. I kept on expecting him to disappear and someone to pop up and scream ”April’s fools!” or something. But of course everything went back to normal in about 3 pages or so. *facepalm*
The ending was nice (not great, sadly) but it doesn’t make up for the rest of the book. If I wasn’t curious about Ethan I’d dnf*** this.
*skimfest = a wonderful activity of skimming almost everything
**idk = I don’t know
***dnf = did not finish
I have mixed feelings about this book.
I loved it, of course. I didn´t skip a single page because as usual, the pace was great, things were happening all the time. The mysteries of the lake gone dark and the moon turned red etc. were very captivating. Merit was as strong and loyal as always. I especially loved her loyalty in the scene with the sunshine test. I loved seeing how the House is dealing with
SpoilerEthan´s death.
The dark atmosphere in the House under Frank´s reign reminded me of the last Harry Potter book :-) I liked that.
That being said, there were some things that I was not so excited about.
Spoiler I really admired Chloe for being brave enough to kill her "main" character. That needs guts. But with all her statements after Hard Bitten, I knew Ethan will be back. I wanted him to come back. But I didn´t like the way it was done.
I was hoping he wasn´t REALLY dead, that Tate used some kind of magic to persuade everyone of Ethan´s death. Or that for some reason Ethan did it himself. Something, anything.
But resurrecting a vampire FROM THE ASHES? WHAT.THE.HELL?
I liked Jonah in this book but I was hoping for more spark, for more chemistry between him and Merit though. They are great as partners, but they miss the spark.
I felt that the ending was too quick.
SpoilerAll the time the idea that it might be Mallory´s work didn´t even cross Merit´s mind? Everything pointed that way. And then suddenly she connects everything together and she and Catcher stop Mallory and everything is over in a couple of pages.
And the idea of Mallory making a familiar from Ethan didn´t work for me. Would it really be easier to resurrect a vampire from the ashes that let´s say kidnap a living one? I don´t think so.
But with everything said, I still loved the book :-)
I was so pissed off when they killed Ethan off that I was this >.< close to swearing off the series, but I kept reading hoping something would happen that would bring him back. So when I got to the end of this book, I was PLEASANTLY surprised. I'm intrigued to see how Chloe Neill will keep the dynamics going! I highly recommend this series!
