IM SO CONFLICTED.
I'm pissed over the entire Mallory thing.
I adore Jonah but sigh.
AND ETHAN. I cried.

It took me a while to get to this book because after the events of the 4th book, like Merit I was lost and confused and depressed. I really didn't know if I would like the series after that. But finally after mourning a few months I finally decided to suck it up and get Drink Deep and I'm glad I did. Really good addition to the series. Things are really starting to heat up and I can't wait to read the next one.
I gave up on the series after this, and I might've done sooner but I really enjoyed the side characters.
This was my least favorite in the series so far. Hard Bitten ends with Ethan jumping in front of a stake to save Merit. I was so mad when I finished, and picked up Drink Deep only to see how she would fix the clusterf**k she created. With Ethan gone, Malik has taken over as master of Cadagon House. The GP sent in Frank Cabot, an annoying little man to represent them and determine if the house was fit. He abuses his power in the extreme, rationing blood, forbidding drinking from one another, putting the house guards under an extreme test of their loyalty. Mallory is still neck deep in her sorceress exams, and she and Catcher are both on edge. Since Ethan's death, Jonah has made himself available to Merit as a partner in hopes of a relationship. When the city of Chicago starts experiencing magical mayhem, they have to help each other to fix it. With Tate gone, the new Mayor is a royal b**ch, and has a healthy dose of bigotry for all things supernatural. Her plans to make every vampire register, so that they can be tracked, and kept up with are just the start of things. I guess, all in all, it was ok. Not my favorite by far, but more a bridge of bullsh*t from book four to book six. Until next time.
****************************Recap/ Spoilers**************************
Strange things are happening in Chicago. Starting with the lake, and river turning black and still. Merit of course is the only one that can save the day. She starts by speaking with the Nymphs of the river, and the Siren of the lake. When the sky turns blood red, lightning strikes she seeks out the fairy queen for answers. Turns out Mallory, while training for her exams has become addicted to black magic. She is attempting to join both the good, and evil magic of the world. In the process she is destroying the city. Merit has dreams/ prophesies that Ethan speaks to her in, and show the tragedy to come. Mallory stole the Maleficium (book of black magic), and Ethans ashes from the Cadagon safe. She uses the ashes to turn Ethan into her familiar, a black cat. Frank Cabot the GP's lackey, is causing all kinds of hell in the house, and pushes Merit into the Red Guard. The lake, and river turn black signaling the first change. The sky turns blood red, and lightning strikes as the second. When the earth erupts, they know that water, air, and earth are involved and next is fire. Merit takes off to stop Mallory from the final stage of her plan, but is unsuccessful. Only Catcher, another sorcerer can stop her. Somehow Ethan magically comes back to life, from a familiar without being 'owned' by Mallory. She is taken into custody, but breaks free of her guards. The end of the book was a little anticlimatic, in that there wasn't a whole lot of reconnection between Merit, and Ethan. It leaves off with the pair of them headed out to catch Mallory, before she can steal the Maleficum away again, and complete her spell. Blah, of course she had to bring him back, but in the meantime this book sucked because he was gone. Hopefully the next will compensate for Drink Deep, because right now I am not feelin the love.

here’s the thing, I love these books so much bc they’re nostalgic to me! but that also means i’m not being very thoughtful when I read them
these books are a little tell not show. for example, saying “I sat down a sobbed for hours” instead of something about how she felt inside physically and emotionally. I prefer writing that really engages me with the characters.
the plot is good! there’s a good balance between high action and just normal life/conversations/chill time, which I appreciate. :)

I love this series and this book didn't disappoint. 5 stars. Can't wait for the next one!
After the ending of Book 4 i was upset, flabbergasted and more. I am glad i was not the only one with this reaction and i am glad i continued reading book 5. Merit proves to be a strong woman who does everything she needs to keep her house and her friends/family save. ....
Lucky for me, i only have to wait a few more weeks for the next installment

Chloe is officially forgiven!!!!!!!!!!!!! =D =D =D =D =D =D =D =D
This book was unexpectedly awesome. To say more would give too much away but just when you think you have everything figured out a new something is revealed and it is jaw dropping.
I loved every moment of this installment and I cannot wait until the next!
