3.91 AVERAGE

Definitely hooked on this series but something felt off about this book. Or maybe it was the absence of you-know-who and the presence of Frank-the-Cunt. Can't count how many times I wanted to kill him. Mallory and Catcher also got on my goddamn nerves as did Merit for letting them treat her like shit. Still love you, Chloe Neill and anticipating what the future holds for the characters in book 6. Off to my Kindle I go.

After a lot of horrible things that happened in the previous book it is now time for Merit, and the rest of the vampires to move forward. It is now two months since that horrible time, and Merit is still having a hard time adjusting to things. She and the rest of the house are having problems with Frank, the vampire their from the GP to monitor the house, and see if it should be shut down or not. Then there is Merit, and her new partner Jonah who seems to have more than friendly feelings in mind when it comes to Merit, but she is still harboring feelings for Ethan. And suddenly Lake Michigan is turning black, and all kinds of supernaturals are getting upset, along with the humans, and the new mayor. It seems they have several more problems to deal with in this book.
I have mixed feelings about this book, I really hated what happened to Ethan, so it made this one not really interesting until the very end. But I won't say more about that because I don't want to ruin it. I also can not stand Mallory, and I really thought Catcher treated Merit pretty badly in this book, he was a real jerk to her. Also Jonah is another favorite character of mine, he is very confident and funny. I enjoyed Merit, and Jonah together, but I still missed how it was before. I can not wait to read this next book, this one ending in somewhat of a cliffhanger. This book slightly got on my nerves, I got very frustrated with the things that kept happening to Merit, especially with Mallory. I have no respect for her, and I think Merit was a far better friend and person than Mallory could ever be. Overall the book was okay, not one of my favorites, but the ending was the best part!

Merit's adventures continue and this time things are different. She finds herself struggling to keep up with things, facing problems everywhere and lacking her loved ones' support.

I figured out a big part of the mystery early on but it was still well written and I enjoyed following Merit while she tried to puzzle things out. A few scenes were a bit vague and I would have preferred them to be a little more detailed, but all in all I enjoyed the book.

The unexpected (yet somehow expected) big surprise in the story was one I was really looking forward to and the author didn't disappoint. Furthermore, I really have to give it up to her for her daring choices and directions she's taking her characters.

Looking forward to seeing where they go next...

Woooooooooow, and I thought the last book was game changing for the series. Holy crap.

Mallory, Jonah, Ethan...So much happened and so many emotions!!!

AMMMMAAAAZZZIIIIINGGGGGGGG

In this installment, Merit is trying to find her way as house Sentinel without her master and on again off again lover Ethan who was staked by her mortal enemy. The house and vampires in general are being blamed for apocalyptic-like changes in the environment. The natural bodies of water in Chicago turn black and become magic vacuums, the sky turns red and is filled with lightning, and the earth splits and spits out new mountains throughout the city.

Merit investigates these changes with Jonah, a vampire from a different house – one who would like to recruit her for a secret vampire guard – and one who has a huge crush on her. After many false starts and leads, Merit and Jonah finally hunt down the source of the city’s woes. Unfortunately for Merit, her best friend and sorceress in training is the source . Mallory is seduced by dark magic and becomes obsessed with combining good and evil magic. Mallory steals a secret and heavily guarded book from Cadogan house along with Ethan’s ashes. She tries to revive Ethan so that she can make him into her vampire familiar. The apocalyptic changes in the environment were a side effect of Mallory combining light and dark forces of magic.

The story had a slow start and it didn’t pull me in until ~2/3 of the way through. There were some parts of the book I liked. I liked Merit finding her own way without Ethan’s guidance. I liked the growth in the partnership between Merit and Jonah. Things I didn’t like – even though I knew it would happen since he was/is a major character, I didn’t like Ethan’s resurrection. I don’t dislike his character, but I feel if rules are established in a series, the author should stick to them. If staking means permanent death, then there shouldn’t be a special spell to revive a beloved/main character. I did not enjoy Mallory’s role in Ethan’s resurrection. Everything we know about Mallory makes her behavior in this book seem odd and uncharacteristic. The explanations given for her behavior were not satisfactory in my opinion. The real Mallory would never try to make her best friends’ dead boyfriend into her familiar. Actually this part of the storyline felt too Willow (Buffy ) to me -- best friend who is a witch with great magical potential who falls prey to dark magic and nearly rips the world apart.

Merit’s investigative skills were seriously lacking in this book. In my opinion it took too long for her to realize Mallory was behind the events. Also, it took her too long to realize her dreams were linked to events occurring around her.

Lastly, when Ethan did return, their reunion felt forced to me…something seemed to be missing…it just felt too neat and tidy.

Oh well, not the best installment, but I will read the next book.

This books keep getting better and better, I need Biting Cold right now!!!

Short Review: Merit, Merit, Merit. I hate you for real. 95% of this book is Merit crying about Ethan, we get it, he's dead, boo ho, move on. Then the last 5% of the book... Boy did she move on!!! Freaking crazy slut. Anyhow, I am sad that Merit's frenemy is turning evil, but come on, it's magic, who can't be evil there. Catcher is annoying and dumb. I was happy to hear my home state mentioned! (Indiana) Filler book for sure.
