Infuriating saga. I regret starting it.
The characters' actions don't match their initial descriptions.
The protagonist Arianna was supposed to be good at planning, calculating, good at assessing her own and her enemies' strength. But we only see her take impulsive, stupid decisions with no planning whatsoever. The same goes for most of the other main characters. Only a villain seems to have the slightest notion of planning. All logic discarded for the author to have her drama.
Gratuitous violence that doesn't really bring much to the story, only plays on the reader's anger.

I am a big fan of Nova's Air Awakens series so I anxious for this new book. I don't like to write negative reviews but this book was hard for me. I will state that I saw no errors in the writing. It was mainly just not my kind of book. The steampunk genre was more punk than steampunk in this book. She creates this fascinating world but you are plopped right down in the middle of the plot with a whole lotta backstory to get you back up to speed. I found that confusing & was disinterested in the story from the beginning simply because I had nothing invested in the characters. When the main character struggles, I like to experience it with them because I have already gotten to know them. That is hard to do with this book. Sorry folks! I would recommend her other series though!

I loved all the strong female characters in this book. Even if they were not all physically strong, they were smart. So refreshing. The male characters kind of take a backseat. I really enjoyed the setting, the storyline, and the magic in this world. What I didn't like: the nearly complete lack of world building. I was so confused for about the first half of this book, and to some degree the rest of it as well. There needed to be a lot more explanation of how things worked. I would want to rate this a 3-3.5 for that reason, but I enjoyed the characters so much that it brings my rating up. I can't wait to see where book two goes.

Ever since the resistance fell, Ari has been making her money by selling her talents to those with the most money. She is brilliant, fearless, and as good a thief as an engineer. Until she comes across a dragon on her way home from a very risky job. Should she stop and take it's heart for more money, or be happy with the money from the job she just finished? This was the first book I've read by Elise Kova, and I have to say, I've been missing out. The book started a little slow, but picked up after the first few chapters. The characters are fantastic!! I love the cover too. I received a copy of this book from Net Galley.

This was such a hefty book and it took me a while to get through this.
There are a lot of terms, places, and dragon honorifics thrown at you immediately, and it was quite particularly challenging to keep in mind.
It was an exciting story though! We traverse through this steampunk world with brutal dragons, magic, and no obvious romantic plotline until about 80% of the way, which was actually refreshing.
I'm not sure yet if I'll be picking up the next book for this. We'll see.
