I’m a sucker for a reflective novel like this, where the protagonist is looking back at formative experiences through an adult lens and reckoning with the reverberations years later. This one had its merits, but wasn’t my favorite. It was relatively predictable and I didn’t feel much of an emotional connection to the characters.

I was so frustrated with Rachel throughout the whole book. I was more frustrated with adult Rachel than I was with youth Rachel because adult Rachel knew better and she just made bad decision after bad decision even after everything she went through. I understand that the mind plays tricks on you and lets you remember things through rose colored lenses when in reality, horrible things were happening and that’s exactly what Rachel went through.

I did appreciate the alternating timeline but I just wish it didn’t alternate every chapter. I would have liked a little more from each timeline at a time before switching. I do think this is a very poignant novel dealing with some heavy topics so please make sure to read the trigger warnings before starting.

This book is about Rachel who still pines for Alistair, the much older man she had a brief fling with when she was 17. Even though she is now married, she reconnects with Alistair after a trip to Greece.

I DNF'd this book at around 40%. Even though she is in her late 20s/early 30s, Rachel still acts like a teenager. She's off-putting and childish. It's like she's permanently stuck in the mind of a 17-year-old girl, and I didn't like that. I also just didn't find this book gripping or fascinating, so I decided to let it go and move on to something else.
