Another great book by a dynamic author/illustrator duo! A boy and his dog pair up to watch for a whale. Text supplies helpful hints for success while also encouraging readers to enjoy the sights and sounds around them.
I loved the imagination present in this title and it's slow peaceful spell it casts. The text is poetic and the artwork perfectly matches that tone.

I haven't read this to kids, so I'm not sure how they'd react to it. I really liked the pictures (Erin Stead continues to impress), but I thought the story was kind of boring? Maybe I should try it again when I'm in a more generous mood.
A really gorgeous picture book, that will be loved by young and old.

if you want to see a whale you shouldn't... Get distracted by all the wonderful things your imagination can create. If you want to see a whale you need to be patient and watch the ocean and be even more patient.
This was a very simple but cute book. I think all of my four stars go to the illustrations honestly. I liked the story but I LOVED the illustrations. The little boy had me from the first page. He was drawn so innocent and quiet and curious. I loved the images in this book.

Among the loveliest kid books I've ever read - there's something here important for me, unfocused me, and the poetry is so well done. My five year old loves it, too.
Extremely sweet fantastical quiet read-aloud picture book about patience and attention, perfect for our whale-loving little girl. Ideal bed-time book without being 'bedtime-ey'.
My favorite part:
"if you want to see a whale
you'll have to just ignore the roses
and all their pink
and all their sweet
and all their wild and their waving
because roses don't want you watching whales
or waiting for
or wondering about
things that are not pink
and things that are not sweet
and things that are not roses"
