We follow our main character, Connor, who is an elementary school aged boy. He lives with his mother in England. His dad moved to America, remarried, and has started a different family. He had a recurring nightmare, one that started happening once his mother became ill. His mom is battling cancer. She is trying all sorts of treatments, but alas, nothing is working. She is hospitalized, and after that, she never returns home. His maternal grandmother comes to stay and take care of Connor, but they really don't get along.

Connor has a large tree in his backyard, and one night, it comes to life. It speaks to him through his bedroom window, sometimes coming inside. At first, Connor believes it's just a new dream. But then, he wakes and finds leaves all over his bedroom. The tree tells Connor that he will share 3 stories with him, and after those stories, Connor must tell the tree his truth.

Connor feels mostly invisible. He gets bullied often at school. He doesn't have any friends really. The teachers all start to treat him differently when they learn his mother is sick.

There are illustrations in the book, which I really enjoyed.

It's raw. It's deep. It's emotional. It's believable. This is a great read about grief, about denial and acceptance, about having to let go.... just so many good topics.

Connor comes to accept his truth and does share it with the tree - that he is tired and exhausted dealing with his mother's illness. He doesn't want her to pass, but he wants this to be over. He has a very difficult time admitting this because he feels as though it will come across that he's glad his mother is dying.

This is a book that doesn't have a happy ending, which I actually appreciated, because too often that's just not how stories really end. Many of them have tragic, sad, hurtful endings, and this story demonstrated that well.

This definitely seemed more like a childrens or middle grade book as opposed to teen, and I definitely shed a couple of tears.
