I've tried reading McCarthy before and never really got into it. But I'm very glad I tried this one.

Talk about violence. Great writing as always yet the ending had me wanting a little bit more from a plot standpoint. The changes in plot are abrupt in certain points, keeps you on your toes.

I watched the movie first and it was so good it's difficult to retroactively assess the book. McCarthy's dialogue is beautiful and his characters interact sans quotes and effort. His descriptions feel pulpy, though, and the movie's crispness captures a better atmosphere. A great read all the same.

Clearly functions better as a screenplay than a novel, although Cormac's weak points are better than some authors' strong points.
Chigurh is the best character. Moss and Bell feel more like plot devices at times. The end dream foreshadowing The Road is nice.

If you've already watched the movie, be warned that you will never be able to unsee Anton Chigurh as this:

description

Should you read this book?

Are you really bothered by a complete lack of quotations?
You may want to skip this.

Are you irritated to no end by short, choppy sentences? Or even worse. Lines that are not sentences but have punctuation?
You may want to skip this.

Are you unsettled when good and justice don't always prevail?
You may want to skip this.

BUT YOU'D BE A FOOL.

I read this in one short session plus one all afternoon session. I felt like I was being granted access to something very indulgent. And I was a glutton, gorging myself on every line, every word. The characters, the scenery, the tone...everything is pure perfection.

I watched half of the movie before reading this, so I had all the movie characters engraved in my mind but didn't know what was going to happen. I'm very glad that I didn't have a clue, but I would still recommend reading even if you have watched the whole movie. It's too good not to.

It takes very little to govern good people. Very little. And bad people can't be governed at all. Or if they could I never heard of it.
