If I could have given more than 5 stars I would have.
What a tremendously well done job of exploring the idea of mortality from the perspectives of good and evil because, in the end, no matter which side you’re on it’s the same fundamental thing.
No Country pulls you in multiple directions at the same time and makes you reflect on yourself, how you got to where you are at that exact moment and what, if anything, you can do about it.
We’re all a coin in a pocket that has taken 22 years to get to this exact moment. We’re also all that single lucky coin, too.

McCarthy calculates the minimum words necessary to describe a scene, writes the scene and then deletes half the sentences. It makes it a pretty interesting read because you really need to pay attention. Hard to process some sections as an audio-book as you can't tone out for even a few seconds.
The story was pretty close to the movie meaning they're both enjoyable. I was hoping the book would resolve some parts of the movie I thought were missing but nope the book happens the exact same way.

It is gory, violent, ruthless and racist—if more than a little inscrutable—all in the service of a higher purpose, to wit: a reflection on the effects of unbridled greed and materialism; and the random and ineluctable fact of death. No book for the faint of heart.

Quite frankly this book is the worst thing I’ve ever read in my life. What pisses me off more is that it had potential at first, and each page got progressively worse.
Let’s start with the technical aspect. Cormac’s refusal to use proper punctuation, commas, or quotations for dialogue makes this book immensely hard and painful to read. It creates abysmal pacing, droning run on sentences, and quite frankly fills me with rage. This story is so hard to follow. His refusal to use ANY proper technical writing tools creates a story that is hard to follow; not because it is complex, but because it’s poorly written.
Any potential the book started off having was squandered away by making it unbearable to read.
Next let’s talk about Cormac’s representation of women. You can tell he hates women from the way he writes them. There was not a single well rounded non-stereotypical woman in this book. I almost wish he had just left the women out all together. They were all subservient cardboard cutouts of what Cormac perceives women to be.
The entire book is so nihilistic, too much so. There is no balance. Every single character is a pessimist. There is so much nihilism that the negativity doesn’t have any real impact, other than to make the book an absolute nightmare to read.
There were so many themes with potential that were watered down. There were a *few* quotable lines in between highly unnecessary dialogue.
The ending:
Lazy, boring, anticlimactic. There were about 6 places that would have made a more impactful ending. As someone who loves open endings, this was atrocious. Don’t even get me started on the plot holes.
In conclusion,
I’ve decided I believe Cormac is a lazy writer who uses “leaving it up to interpretation” as a facade for his laziness. He wants to seem “profound” , but I found it quite unbearable. I genuinely do not understand how this book is so highly rated.
Also: Cormac groomed a minor, and having learned this after reading I am not surprised, and this just further supports that he views women as nothing but subservient objects to be taken advantage of.
