I ended up thoroughly enjoying this book but had somewhat of a hard time when I first started it. The narrator can be unlikable at times but makes very thoughtful insights. This book is also just beautifully written. I look forward to reading another book by Cusk at some point.

listen, i am smart. i have an undergrad and masters degree in literature. so if i’m having to read and reread sentences over and over in an attempt to work out what they’re even talking about, i’m going to assume that’s an issue with the book and not with me. i’ve seen sooo many reviews being like ‘i guess i’m not smart enough for this book’ no ! the book thinks it’s too smart for u (it’s not, it’s pretentious)

loved the premise, but the characters felt more like concepts than people and i couldn’t understand their motivation for almost anything. except brett, i loved brett

there are some really nice quotes and some interesting views on art and motherhood but overall reading this was more annoying than anything else

I loved 50% of the book - the writing style, the reflections of the main character, the descriptions of how art makes her feel and her longing for art to explain her life. But after a while, I struggled to continue reading at to "listen" to the character.
