absolutely enthralling! It is not often that we hear about women in war, particularly in prominent roles. Ms. Abbott presents the stories of 2 confederate women and 2 union women and shows how they took advantage of being underestimated as the weaker sex to serve their respective causes. Well written, thoroughly researched, and utterly enjoyable.
Well it took me a while to finally finish reading this book, and by finish I mean I listened to the rest of the book. It was definitely worth pushing through to hear the stories of Emma, Elizabeth, Belle, and Rose.
I loved this book because it was such a great reminder that history is filled with the stories of strong women. Women that defied the rules and regulations of their times to stand for what was right (in the case of the confederates, it was what they believed in...not what was right)
My favorite storylines were Emma’s and Elizabeth’s. They both played such a significant role and it is unfortunate that we are not taught of the bravery and boldness these women exemplified when we learn about the Civil War in school. Their stories deserve to be told.
As for Rose and Belle, it is almost unbelievable the things they got away with because they were women. Never underestimate the power of a woman who believes in a cause!

This was pretty good, but both of the Confederate women discussed here were absolutely infuriating so it was not an amazing reading experience.

During the United States Civil War there were many spies for the Confederacy and for the Union, and this book delves into the lives and achievements of four women who spied and fought for their beliefs on either side.
This is a fascinating piece of history that belongs in text books. It is a book I didn't want to put, and had to remind myself this is not historical fiction, but history. Five stars as I already wish to read it again.

I absolutely loved this book. The information is presented much like a narrative, which gives so much life to these historical figures. The author weaves the narratives of four women (both Yankee and rebel) so that they follow the true chronological order of the war. If more non-fiction history books were written like this, I'd never stop reading.
