Returning a few days after I finished to write my full review. I'm getting back into reading, and I found this book to have a very easy-to-read voice, stringing me along. This is a very dark story, with a sad ending, but it wasn't difficult to get through like some other very heavy books I've read (as far as the act of reading goes). Just beautiful prose.
This is the first historical LGBT book I've picked up in a long time, and the relationship is so well written. I was worried it would end up becoming a romance novel after the two characters meet. Thankfully not; their story stays tragic and naturalistically written.
One of the major complaints I've seen is how the ending is rushed. I have to disagree; the pace does pick up drastically but I think it matches how the characters are feeling: disoriented, time slipping away from them, the climactic event coming too soon, unable to stop it. I found that it mirrored the beginning of the story, the way time slipped by in the aftermath of the storm. Overall a stunning read!

I enjoyed reading it. I think this book will be a good fit for readers who are growing beyond young adult fiction. I think the first half of the book has good tension building, but I kind of lost it at the end. I wish the book had given me a little more space to grieve considering how many losses the main characters experience, the ending felt a bit rushed in my opinion.
