The characters said exactly what they meant and wanted and felt, except Alosa. Levels of clear communication and self-awareness that would be commendable in real people but all the conflict that is supposed to come from those missed connections just evaporated with little to replace it.
Again, entertaining, kept me engaged enough to read it in a day, but when the only moment I felt tense was when
It's a shame because I did enjoy all the individual tropes, this should have been an easy win. Just goes to show, tension serves a purpose.

In the first book it's not that obvious too but I don't like the way this series portrays men as evil and dangerous and the language, plus some of the gendered mechanics of mermaids rubs me the wrong way.
Graphic: Gun violence, Gaslighting, and Cannibalism
Moderate: Alcoholism and Confinement

That said, there are a few reasons I didn’t rate it a full 5 stars:
- it’s less spicy than the first book. Elisa and Riden had MUCH more action, and I was hoping this would get steamier. If anything, it’s more PG
- I got a little tired of their back and forth stubborn-ness. She had so many chances to admit her feelings, and he was all over the place. It got a bit boring in the middle.
- There is a LOT more death and gore in this one. Not that it bothered me too much, but I was surprised since the last one wasn’t nearly so bloody and gruesome.
- I thought it was weird that the whole crew was trying to force Kieran on Cerinda even though she clearly expressed that she didn’t want it, and everyone was ok with it??
