I am really sorry that this book turned out so... stupid. I am very critical when it comes to science fiction, but Brightly Burning by Alexa Donne was just really really bad.

It is honestly one of the worst futuristic worlds I have ever read. Everything was just so incredibly underdeveloped and weak. I didn't really care for any of the characters Spoilerbut no one died in this absurdly dangerous world and so it really didn't matter, which was both cliche and unbelievably unrealistic. And the romance ugh the romance was just terrible. I had no idea that so many random dudes could love this one girl. I usually don't care all that much for romance, but this one was just completely unbearable.

I wish I could say there was at least one redeemable quality to this book, but it was honestly all just plain bad. Would not recommend.

A very strange take on Jane Eyre! I'm glad I found it but was also a little bit bummed. It didn't really stay true the characters of the original story

This was a delightful reimagining of Jane Eyre. Set in a future in which an ice age has covered the earth and humanity has ascended to space, young Stella Ainsley must find her place in a society that has no real place for her. This was a sweet, fun novel.

After just having finished 'Skyward' by Brandon Sanderson, I was craving some more sci-fi, but since it's not my usual genre, this is one of the two books I could choose from right off my TBR shelf. (If you take anything away from this review, it's that you should read 'Skyward' by Brandon Sanderson. It's amazing.)
I did not compare the two because, let's be honest, it wouldn't have done this book any favors.
I read Jane Eyre when I was a little too young and honestly found it boring and/or unintentionally hilarious (I sometimes go back to the scene where Mr. Rochester proposes: I laugh every time) and I need to reread it and give it an honest chance now that I'm older, but we're getting ahead of ourselves. Let's talk about this book.

What I liked:
-the plot was really interesting. There were obviously twists and turns I recognized from Jane Eyre but the story had its own twists and turns that kept the story going and interesting
-the character, despite occasional bouts of obnoxiousness, was generally likable and easy to root for
-the book made me laugh a lot, sometimes unintentionally, but overall, I had a great time and was never bored

What I didn't like:
-the world-building was weird and only half-way done: I still had no idea what Stella's world looked like in the end
-the character development was pretty shit in most cases. Some characters halted their developments, others had them away from the main narrative and other characters were downright unnecessary
-wow these must be the most incompetent people ever
-classic 'first-book' mistakes: telling not showing, overwriting some scenes, underwriting others, a little insta-lovey for my taste and others that I can't go into detail about because of spoilers

Overall, solid if a forgettable book that I liked but never loved. If you're in the mood for it, I'd say go for it!

This is a fun retelling of [b:Jane Eyre|10210|Jane Eyre|Charlotte Brontë|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1327867269s/10210.jpg|2977639] set in space. I haven't read Jane Eyre in many years, but have more recently seen the movies, and the storyline hits all the high points. Purists may quibble with one larger change, but it worked for this story. The major issue here is what a jerk Hugo is almost the entire time, and I can't remember if Rochester is just as jerky in the original. Overall, though, a really fun dystopian retelling.
