This was a fantastic children's book and it made me want to read Pablo Neruda. Read banned books

An Instagram reel was showcasing banned books, and this popped up. (It then led me down a rabbit hole on banned books.) The illustrations looked amazing. (And are.) I was wondering what could cause the book to get potentially banned. It looked pretty innocent, and it is. The comments on the reel said it was due to Neruda's communist ties. His activism is mentioned, but nothing that a 5 year old would recognize as communism or really even an adult if you were not looking for it. My one qualm with the book is I wish they had included one of his poems to introduce him to others. Per other reviews, the words in the illustrations are from his works. I read the English version with the illustrations still in Spanish. So, that tie-in was lost in that version of the book.
Ages: 4-7 years
Pablo Neruda wrote about the world around him: sometimes about love, other times about curiosity, and eventually about human injustice and protest. Brown creates a beautiful mosaic of Neruda's life and his fascination with his surroundings.
This book excels in showcasing Pablo Neruda's love of the world around him. In each painting, Spanish and English words are interwoven in the images, showing children the connection between words and images (an early literacy skill). On top of this enriching integration of words, the artwork is stunningly filled with luscious colors that capture the true emotion of each scene. Illustrator Julie Paschkis traveled to Neruda's home, clearly imbibing the Chilean surroundings. This would make an excellent book to spark a poetry program for children to write poetry about anything--just like Pablo Neruda!

The simple picture book biography of the Chilean poet, Pablo Neruda, turns into a wondrous work of art through Julie Paschkis' illustrations. Spanish and English words flow across the pages-- becoming ribbons of water, flower petals and leaves, protest flags, and sunlight. An exquisite testament to Neruda's legacy-- the words he loved and left for us to read.
Thus book would be an ok children's biography of Neruda, but the illustrations lift it to the level of amazing. I've read the story, now I'm going to go back and wallow in all the English and Spanish words that are woven into the pictures.

Beautiful illustrations and I’ll be looking into reading his poetry
The words in the illustrations make this book out of control cool. Plus I mean what a wonderful person to learn about.
