Some questions left unanswered which I wish weren't!
As a teenager I read Mist over Pendle by Robert Neilland was enthralled. So many many years later back in the same era and I was thrilled again. A fascinating story. Characters slightly flawed but likeable and not quite knowing where we were going next. A very good yarn !
Pretty interesting. Makes me google Pendle Witches. Us humans are messed up.

I was able to get this book finished within a week, which is rare for me. The story kept me regularly hooked throughout and have an attachment to Fleetwood as the main character. Very glad to have read it
The Familiars is an excellent debut novel with two strong heroines.
After reading the author’s note included at the end of the novel I was surprised to learn that many of the characters and events featured in the book were real. While I knew a little bit about Britain’s witch trials, I wasn’t familiar with the details of the Pendle Witch Trials that the story focuses on. Alice, Fleetwood and her husband Richard were all real people although there is no evidence the two women knew each other. Learning how much research Halls undertook to write The Familiars only makes me appreciate her work even more. The new elements she created (such as the friendship between Fleetwood and Alice) all feel completely natural and fit perfectly with the known historical elements of the plot.

Interesting premise, good work with the setting, but pointless with a boring narrator, and cardboard cutouts of side characters. The premise alone - 17th century England, witch hunt, mass hysteria, feminism, midwifery, etc - was very promising, but overall this was a short, but uninteresting read.
