a story about a pregnant noblewoman, her marriage and her relationship with her midwife set against the 16th Century Pendle witch trials. I did know a bit about these trials and what lead up to them. It slightly reminded me of Rebecca in parts. The author did bring in a supernatural element which (I felt) wasn’t necessary to the story and did a disservice to all the innocent people who were executed for witchcraft - some of the characters have magical qualities, so is she saying they WERE witches? But it is a fairly enjoyable story about a fictional main character* and her husband woven around real events and real characters. It is sort of wound up into a happy ending, which again left me feeling a bit 'meh' as the reality was pretty sad and pretty grim for these poor people. Also didn't find the marriage/husband believable ("I was so worried about your health during pregnancy that I went off and got myself a mistress (yeah right) but got you pregnant anyway"! I paraphrase).

I would have liked more about the real characters and their more interesting story (IMO) woven into a fictional story.

*there was an actual Fleetwood Shuttleworth but, other than the name, the rest is fictional

Historical fiction.
Witches.
Those are the words that made me want to read this book. I was not disappointed. Set in 1612, this book really paints a good picture of what it would've been like then. I enjoyed it, and I think I will add it to the books I like to read around Halloween.

I received a copy from Net Galley.

DNF. The description of a woman as having a confident look in her eyes, “almost masculine”, coupled with the man “eager for an heir” (you mean, pressuring you into sex), were pretty big signifiers that this book wasn’t for me. If I’m feeling generous then I’d say that historical fiction just maybe isn’t for me. But ultimately I think this is a Mills&Boon novel that hasn’t yet seen the feminist light of day.
