Girls of Little Hope is a story of teen angst in 90s small town America. The eerie tale follows the story of an all-girl trio (Donna, Rae and Kat) and the strange goings-on in their hometown, Little Hope.

A monster-mystery of sorts, Girls of Little Hope is one for Stranger Things, Twin Peaks and The Thing fans. Although a little slow in pace, I was invested in the girls’ stories and struggled to put it down.

An exploration of female friendships in small town America, Girls of Little Hope unpacks important themes surrounding identity, relationships and trauma. More than just a missing girl narrative, the novel highlights the horrors, sufferings and injustices endured by young women in everyday life.

This is a must-read for fans of female bonds and nostalgic horror. I loved every minute of it!

First half is frustratingly slow; it takes *ages* to get to the actual horror, which is the bit I bought the book for. When you get to the horror, it's a super fun concept--I just wish it hadn't taken so long to get there.

Characters were well-written, but the glacial pace of the first half and then comparatively fast second half really ruined it for me. The teenagers leaned to feeling a liiiittle too adult, but that's hardly a sin.

Ultimately, though, I think this is challenging-in-a-good-way YA. Not going to re-read, but was ultimately decent.

This was such a pleasant surprise! I have to admit I'm definitely one to judge a book by its cover as well as be apprehensively skeptical about YA. Both of these things occurred with Girls of Little Hope and I've never been happier to be wrong. This book delivers horror in spades with great characters, a good build-up and an awesome reveal that isn't immediately obvious to the reader. I enjoyed how the story unfolded and only really knocked a star off due to the ending losing a little bit of momentum for me. High recommend to all horror fans, don't sleep on this underrated book!

This had me hooked from only the blurb on the back of the book, murder mystery in a small town with a punky diverse female cast? Yes please!

*SPOILERS AHEAD*
Firstly, I loved the three main characters - Rae, Donna and Kat. Each a uniquely different person, between Donna’s spunky rebelliousness, Rae’s desire to break free of her parents expectations and Kat’s undying love for her best friends through anything. I truly felt for Rae trying to protect Donna from a great evil while trying to continue to be the best daughter for her overbearing father, she just wanted to be her true self in a household that would’ve shunned her for who she loves
