Can you believe this was my first time reading this? I can't believe I haven't read this until now.

My reaction as the book came to a close, from about the beginning of the last chapter was, "Louie, Louie, Louie SHUT UP!!!!"

If that is what Ms. Rice intended (and I think it was), "Huzzah!"

A bit over done at times with description - there were times I felt like I would drown in her description. However, I will say I could see everything, every color, hear every sound, smell every unpleasantness. Maybe I didn't need that much help seeing it since I am from the South and have been to New Orleans times to numerous to count.

Though Louie felt well fleshed out Lestat did not (but, again, I suspect I see what she is doing there). I will read the second book and confirm my suspicious about that choice. Not a bad choice.

While I understood the use of the interviewer as a device, and maybe cans see how it will relate in future, I always cringe at devices. I know the rules "you have to have a reason why a story is told in first person. Is it a diary? Is it a letter?" I always feel this is a bullshit rule and don't follow it myself (and I'm sure will be roundly criticized by those you believe in this rule). I feel it is a very transparent device. Maybe it won't appear so in the 2nd book. Maybe she hates it too and that is why it will tie (as I suspect) into the action of the sequel. Ms. Rice, is this your way of thumbing your nose at the rule? If so, I applaud you.

About the interviewer, again, I felt I didn't always believe him, he was either predictable or well out of the line of believably. For a character with which we have such small, episodic face-time, it's hard to round out enough to guess his motives and believe them without predicting his every move.

I don't know if this is a read-again book, but it might be (my highest compliment). Time will tell.

The first one in the series is the best, though 2 an 3 are okay as well. My notes from my journal of 1991 say, "I really enjoyed it. It's erotic, even though there's no actual sexual intercourse. Even in the parts where there's no overt physical contact, her style of writing is hypnotic and sensual."

I’ve watched the film and I fell in love with the TV series without ever reading the book.
Installment #1 of the Vampire Chronicles is a must-read if you are a fan of either the film or the TV series. Although both adaptations have their own spin on the book, reading this before or after engaging with the productions is a must!
After reading this, I have so many thoughts on the film & televisions versions and now I have to do a deep dive & rewatch!

I recommend this book to a lover of vampirism lore.

DID NOT FINISH

There were just too many lines that made my skin crawl, like some of the lines deserved jail time for being written (in my opinion)

It's been a very long time since I read Interview, but I tried to audiobook this time and it was wonderful, particular Part III in Paris. It was also different hearing the words, knowing she wrote the story to process the grief of losing her daughter to leukemia. It made the listen all the more heartbreaking.
