⤷ i wasn't expecting myself to enjoy this so much! i adored Evie as a character, she was funny and honestly really relatable — if you ignore the fact she's working for a supervillain. i loved kingsley he's adorable, a talking frog? SIGN ME UP!! the villain being so caring towards Evie even though his castle got destroyed he was more worried about if she was okay or not aww. i was gagged by so many plot twists oh my god.

Totally get the hate - the writing was atrocious and the world building was non-existent. The main character was the definition of an 'I'm not like other girls' pick me. I also did not understand why one of the love interests was just suddenly in love with her after absolutely no romantic scenes together. And can we please stop pairing 500 year old men with 20 year old women??? All this being said, it was actually quite entertaining and I will be reading the next book lmao.

I know there has been a lot of mixed feelings on this book.
But I am so proud to say that I THOROUGHLY enjoyed this book!!!!
I’m not much of a fantasy reader but Alex wrote this story perfectly for a reader like me. Not to much to think about or picture in my mind.
I truly felt like I could watch this story from the sidelines, it kept me intrigued it kept me entertained and it kept me curious.
I admire Isla a lot, going through your whole life feeling powerless but then doing everything in your power to stay alive and keep going. It was incredible to go on this adventure!
Before I read this book, all I kept reading was hate on this book.
I found this disgusting.
I would like you to put yourself in this authors shoes; who has put her heart, soul, blood, sweat and tears into every word, sentence, phrase, paragraph, chapter and page. This has been a dream of yours from the time you were young. You found a publisher that was interested and took a chance, because they saw more than just a story, they saw talent, they saw opportunity.
I am so happy I read this book, I immediately put the next one on hold through Libby, because I enjoyed it that much.
Alex, if you ever read or see this, please know I am a HUGE fan and supporter of your books! You’re an incredible writer and I can’t wait to read the rest of this series and see what else you publish!

This certainly isn't the best book -- lots of things that just don't make sense, are very predictable, or come from other YA fantasy novels. That being said, I was in the mood for YA fantasy and this book was very readable! I would probably give my enjoyment of the book 4/5 stars and quality at 2.5/5 stars, so I'm averaging them out to around 3.

Can't wait to read the next one!
This story was so engaging. I loved all the action scenes and how relatable Isla was as a main character. Normally reading stories like this, I can't really relate with how some of the characters feel about other characters, but in this book I felt like I was along for the ride the whole time.
Favorite Quotes:
"The wind spoke of heartbreak, from Wildlings who had made the mistake of falling in love. Of hearts, eaten and torn apart by nails sharp as knives. It told her stories that seemed old as the trees themselves, born of seeds that were rumored to come straight from Lightlark."
"'Don't take another . . . float,' she said, looking down and not seeing any feet." - LOL
"His face was strange, etched and lined in a million ways. With a desperate jolt, he reached farther, only to roar again in pain, the sun splitting his skin in two. Blood pooled below her in a crimson puddle. It's warmth was almost a comfort in the cold."
