Concept seems fun but I could not get past the confusing and frankly amateurish writing style. Less than 20 pages in and I felt so lost.

There were moments in this book that I could picture perfectly in my mind. A detailed painting, with every stitch of a character's outfit outlined. The visuals that this book sets up are stunning. In some ways, it feels like this book was a movie first.
I personally felt disconnected from the story, and there were moments where the pacing and flow felt awkward and disjointed. I absolutely cannot get a sense of the size of Lightlark and the isles. I'm told there are countless people there, but it doesn't feel like it. The ending comes at you like the rapid unravelling of a sweater when you pull at one loose string, leaving you with handfuls of loose, twisting yarn and one less sweater.
After reading the author's acknowledgements where she mentions that "[Lightlark] was the place [she] wanted to visit", my issues with the book make more sense. The vivid scenes feel like daydreams, with a haphazard stitching of plot to tether them all together into one story.

Overhyped, under-delivered. The premise had potential but it fell short of what could have been told with this story. I don't see myself finishing this series.
