I stumbled upon this book when looking for a thriller/mystery novella for a reading challenge. I didn't know what to expect but I enjoyed this story. The first half of the book is written as diary entries that happened in the past. Then the last half is the present. Both parts pulled me in and I wanted to see where the book was going.

While the twist wasn't shocking it was still a good twist. This is a great book to read if you are wanting something different for the holiday season besides romance.

My qualm with this book is that the character, Ashley, is written like a dim-witted 11-year-old rather than a 20-something in college. Her voice is very juvenile and does not match the overall book. I enjoy epistolary-style books, but the diary entries were meh and made me roll my eyes. The second half was much more interesting; having an open-ended conclusion did make me think about the story for a minute.

1⭐️ for the audiobook, because my goodness, did that performance and production fall flat.
Distracting sound effects took away from the story, and the narrator couldn't keep a convincing American accent, instead consistently blurring between British and American accents (the stereotypical Cali-Valley girl high pitch.) Just no. It was confusing at times trying to parse which character she was trying to do since she couldn't maintain the American accent.

i thoroughly enjoyed this. i loved how part of the story was told in the diary - entry style from one character, with all questions answered and given the full picture of what truly happened by our other main character in the second part. this was a quick read, a compelling mystery and really well done!

Pleasantly surprised by this one!

Yes to more mystery and thriller authors putting out fun novellas.

Very short audiobook (3 hrs).
I’m not sure if the flipping pages on the background were an “effect” of reading the diary but it was extremely distracting. I also heard some clicking as well. Seems like a nice storyline, however, I don’t recommend the audio version.
For the record, I love his books!

WOW! This is definitely a good read, especially during the winter months. Don't be fooled into expecting a cozy Christmas thriller. Instead, prepare for a journey into darker themes which is perfectly right up my alley.

While I'm usually not drawn to diary-style writing, this format surprisingly worked well for me in this instance. The twists and turns were mind-blowing, and I found myself thoroughly immersed in the story. However, I must caution against opting for the audiobook. In my opinion, it doesn't do justice to the book. Skip it and savor the text instead.

throwin a nice lil holiday season mystery in there! I shoulda physically read this one, the accent was awful. kinda predictable, but I still enjoyed it.
