A cozy christmas mystery, a little bit gothic, a little bit decadent. The framing story was interesting, as was the resolution between all parties involved, but the novella was primarily an atmospheric story, and then a character study into the prejudices of modern landed gentry.
I thought the pacing was good and the story wrapped itself up without any hiccups. I liked Ashley’s diary entries and even though I wasn’t surprised by anything, I think this book did what it needed to if you’re looking for a quick holiday themed thriller.

A Christmas crime novel in March? Why not! There’s never a wrong time for a little holiday cheer and a touch of murder.
The first part of this book dragged just a bit, but it was still enjoyable. Then the second half picked up the pace, pulling me in with its mysterious tone and fast-moving plot. It’s a quick read—blazing fast, really—but the suspense keeps your brain tickled.
What really made this book stand out, though, was the characters. They brought everything together, adding the perfect touch to an already intriguing story. Not quite a five-star read, but definitely worth picking up—no matter the season.

I was not disappointed. I could not put this down/stop listening.
I made a prediction early on and was very close in the end, except for the "why".
It also had an element that I had not expected, but totally get why it is there.
Not a "cozy" Christmast story, but enjoyable nonetheless.
