Fun Christmas thriller novella. At first I struggled a bit to understand but after the halfway point i was sucked in and the final lines are great. I ended thinking “woah, wait, whattttt”

A much darker story than I anticipated, but I loved that surprise for a holiday novella!
I appreciated the unasked questions that I want to share, but it would be a spoiler. Instead, I thought this was a really fascinating story that had twists I wasn't expecting, though they were not the jaw-dropping kind, but rather darker ones.
One thing that did drive me crazy in the audio was the way too frequent page turning sounds added in the epistolary sections. I get that we are reading a diary, but I don't need a page turning every other sentence. It felt like she must have only wrote one sentence per page. It was distracting.
That said, I did get over it and still very much enjoyed the darker holiday read and recommend it for anyone looking for less saccharine stories!

Ashley is an American studying abroad in London. She has no living family and no friends to speak of so she was planning to spend Christmas alone. When her classmate, Emma, invites her to spend Christmas at her family’s estate in the countryside, Ashley quickly agrees. She is hoping her Christmas adventure will be like a good book. Once she gets there she starts wondering if the book she’s starring in is a romance novel or a gothic murder mystery.
Half of this book is told through Ashley’s diary while at the estate, the other half is a present day POV. This was a great novella and had me sucked in from the very beginning. I wouldn’t say there were any major twists that the reader can’t see coming a mile away but it was a fun read nonetheless. Other than the story being told over a Christmas holiday, there’s nothing particularly Christmassy about it so if you are looking Hallmark x thriller vibes this isn’t necessarily it. Definitely recommend though. It’s a good short read!
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this ARC.
